Our six year old grandson Ian thinks about God a lot, and positively so. He
told his mother the other day,"God has blessed me with two wonderful
grandmothers." Those are the words of one who expresses gratitude. He also
thinks about God and his own behavior. What's interesting about this is
that neither of his parents are particularly religious. His mother was
raised in a home that practiced observant Judaism; his father in a commune
that professed a general spirituality but with some hostility to organized
religion. I think my grandson has a good relationship with God, and I
intend to help him nourish it when he invites me to do so.

Robert Coles' book on the spiritual life of children is a good read.
