Chem Abstracts Online with EndNote
CONVERTING SEARCH RESULTS
TO A REFERENCE DATABASE
WITH EndNote/EndLink
EndNote Plus is an "enhanced reference database and bibliography
maker". It is a database manager--specializing in storing, managing,
and searching for bibliographic references in your private reference library.
It is also a bibliography maker--it builds lists of cited works automatically.
It can be used to insert citations into word processing documents and later
scan these documents for in-text citations to compile a bibliography, in
any format needed. [From the manual]
- Launch EndNote by double-clicking on the
EndNote Plus 2.0.1 icon. The program is on the Chemistry Department
server and can be accessed by using Chooser in the
Apple Menu. Select AppleShare, College Center EtherTalk
as the ethernet zone, and mcmuym as
the server name. A dialog box will appear that asks for your LOGINID and
PASSWORD for access to this server. Select the Dept Resources server
(which is really a folder on Mark Muysken's desktop computer). EndNote
is found in the EndNote Plus folder.
- Begin to construct a new reference library with the File,
New... command. A dialog box will appear where you can name your
new library and place it in a specific directory. There is much that EndNote
Plus can do. For example, you can manually type in references. At this
point we will focus on importing the references obtained CAS Online search
from the previous page.
- It is wise to import new references into a new library and later merge
them into your working reference library. So with the new library open,
use the File, Import... command. A dialog box will appear
asking for the name of the import file. You should choose the file that
you captured in the previous Telnet session. Use the EndLink
2.0 option. Hit the Import button. Another dialog
box will appear, prompting you for the Filter File. We want the Filter File
for Chemical Abstracts. Using the pulldown menu for choosing directories,
you should choose desktop, then double-click on the following
choices as they appear in the file menu: Dept Resources, EndNote Plus, EndLink
Filters Collection, STN, CA (STN). Once you double-click
on CA (STN) or hit the Open button, the importing will
begin.
- EndLink is smart enough to skip over any lines in the captured
Telnet session file that it does not understand, so only results
of the CAS Online DISPLAY command are incorporated into the database.
- Here is what the new library window ought
to look like after the CAS Online search results have been imported into
the library.
- If you have never used EndNote before, double-click
on one of the entries to see how the bibliographic information is stored
in the database. Here is a sample reference.
