Chem Abstracts Online with EndNote
USING Telnet
TO DO AN ONLINE SEARCH
- Launch Telnet by double-clicking on the
Telnet icon.
- Begin a Telnet session by using the File, Open Connection...
command. A dialog box will appear. In the Host/Session Name
field type 134.243.5.32; this is the IP number for the Chem
Abstracts On-line computer. Nothing needs to be entered into the
other field. Then hit the Connect button or press Return.
- InTelnet make sure that the Session, Local Echo
command is
on (it will have a check beside it if it is on; the default is off). Also
use the Session, Capture Session to File command to save
your search results. When you do this, a familiar Save file
dialog
box will appear. Name the file and put it in the desired directory.
Your Telnet session from this point on will be written to this
file in
addition to appearing on the screen. The file will be closed when
you quit Telnet or when you use the Session, Capture Session
to File command again.
- Hit Return. A prompt that says Type "x":
will appear. Do not
type "x", but "i" and Return. You will
be prompted for our
LOGINID and our PASSWORD. If you successfully log in,
choose "3" when prompted for the screen type.
- You should now see the "=>" prompt and may begin
entering CAS
Online commands. If you want to perform a real search you must
start with the FIL CA command. This switches databases from the
default "Learning Chemical Abstracts" (LCA) database to the full
"Chemical Abstracts" database.
- Here are some frequently used commands to get you started on a
basic search. Consult CAS Online instructions for more details.
- EXPAND/AU Rose G This give a
list of authors with last name
Rose and first name starting with G from which you can select for a
search. These are number E1, E2, E3, etc. and can be search with the
SEA command.
- SEARCH lysozyme
This finds all entries with the keyword "lysozyme".
You can also use proximity operators such as T4(w)lysozyme and
Boolean operators such as lysozyme AND folding. Results
of the
searches are returned as L1, L2, L3, etc. These can be referred to in further
searches as in L1 AND stability or when using the DISPLAY
command.
- DISPLAY L1 1-200 ALL This displays the first 200
results of search
L1 in the "ALL" format, which gives complete bibliographic information
including the abstract. The "BIB" format gives bibliographic information
without the abstract. EndNote/EndLink reads the results of the
DISPLAY
command in the extended format (i.e. do not use the "CBIB" format).
- LOG Y is the quit command.
Here is a sample search.
