RE: [asa] Big Bang article

Yes, it seems very ad hoc. To claim a "universe could form inside this room
and we'd never know" sounds like something from Men in Black. How many
other universes have we observed?

The end of the news report seems almost contradictory: "..., we should say
that we don't know whether there was anything - or if there was, what it
was." We don't know is right, so why suggest otherwise? The CMBR data may
indicate nothing regarding other universes. Of course, the idea that it
might is intriguing, but it is overplayed in the article.

I do like that they are investigating the CMBR for anisotropies. [Does
anyone know about the 10% variation? This isn't the dipole previously found
and predicted is it?] Looking for other universes from the CMBR data seems
more plausible than extrapolating from quantum events and promoting the
"Parallel Universe Theory". I would bet this latter theory is the greatest
extrapolation in the history of man, right?

The article said:
"Much work remains to be done on the theory: the researchers' first
priority will be to calculate the odds of a new universe appearing from
a previous one."

As if there were any hope or possibility for calculating such odds...
I'm sure Dembski would also like to get in there with his calculated
odds, too. I don't see how you can calculate odds without knowing all
possible outcomes and their probability.

An interesting article on the BBC website...any
thoughts from the physicists/astromomers out there?
