A few other comments on the autos:
Conveniences on the present day car:(not present on the 1963 cars)
AC
Auto transmission
Cruise Control
3,000 miles (vs 1,000 miles) oil changes
Tachometer
Center brake light
quieter (as I remember)
smoother ride (pretty sure of this)
much better handling
backup lights
better tires
FM radio
CD player
Compass
Outside temperature gauge
Offhand, I cannot think of any features on the earlier cars (a 1940
low milage DeSoto and a 1963 Chevy II SS coupe) that were better than
my daughter's 2007 Corolla. Well -- the DeSoto did have more interior
room (but a miniscule trunk space).
Again -- my point is -- $4.00 gas is not that much out of line with
the world of the 60s.
