I think this fits, for those too innocent to doubt seem to be the ones
who observe the kind of miracles that are described in the New Testament.
I cannot vouch for the sources, but I have heard that the African church
regularly sees miracles happen. I note that Matthew 17:20 is in all the
texts.

I am highly skeptical of those who make their living by healing. I read a
book by a physician years ago. He had looked for evidence of a healing
for some years without finding any. But I recall two brothers in a small
town who were reputed to have the gift of healing. They were simply two
hardworking men who did not promote themselves. But the sick members of
the congregation (it was not Pentecostal) called on them for prayer and
laying on of hands. More than that I do not know.

I often wonder whether my own skepticism at claims of miracles isn't
fueled in some ways by fear. It seems that most of the "miracle" stories
I hear about come from people I would frankly judge as not very
sophisticated intellectually or theologically. Maybe it's true that some
of these stories arise because the people involved are too credulous.
But could it also be that my supposedly superior education sometimes gets
in the way of the mysteries of faith experiences like miraculous
healings? Am I sometimes just too afraid of not being in control?
