Hi, Burgy,

I prefer to use the term "wishful thinking", rather than lying. The trouble
is if you want to believe anything badly enough, it mars your scientific
judgement, and you don't exercise proper scrutiny over the bits you should.

Of course, all scientists are prone to this - the bigger the prize, the more
prone you are. Hence the infamous "Cold fusion" fiasco perpretated by
Fleishmann and Pons going to the press before peer review. The thought that
a fusion reactor saving the world's energy problems could be constructed for
a couple of hundred dollars was such a big prize that they convinced
themselves too early that they were right.
