Goodbye

I've decided to drop out of the reflector for a while. I've been around
for nearly a year, have made contact with some very impressive folks who
have taught me a great deal. I thank you all.

I hope some of my contributions have been helpful. Statistics, with some
expertise in mathematics and physics, is a long ways from biology
geology, theology and Christian history - and I have been stretched.

I have observed a wide variety of motivations: academic curiosity, a very
sincere desire to integrate faith and science, a strong desire to defend
the faith against the (perceived) mistaken views of those within and
without the faith, and, in a few cases, a desire to show Christians why
God is irrelevant to explaining life. I have found all of this to be
stimulating and mostly positive.

I have recently expressed my disagreement with Walter, a real tiger for
the faith (as he sees it). Perhaps the total war model that he seems to
exemplify (at least to me) is the right approach. I doubt it, but I still
have a great deal of respect for him. My personal belief is that how we
disagree with each other matters much more than we realize, and very
likely much more than the issue of whether macroevolution is right or
wrong. In the end, each of us must answer for our own actions, and not
for those of anyone else - for me a genuinely scary prospect.

I suspect I will check into the archives from time to time, and might
even respond from that vantage point. I can imagine returning to the
reflector in the future.

Finally, I would like to thank Terry for the very considerable effort that
he has put in to make the reflector function well. I have the greatest
respect for a bunch of fine faculty members at Calvin, and have bragged
you guys up around my church on numerous occasions.

So Goodbye for now.
