Leaving aside the inadequate "only a parable" characterization, maybe the way
God wants us to know how he created things is by studying the creation. The
same way we gain knowledge of nuclear physics, geology, organic chemistry,
and all the other scientific subjects that are not taught about in the Bible.
God, being sovereign over nature, is every bit as responsible for those
things as for the creation of the universe, yet it seems he had more
important things he wanted to teach us in Scripture and left us in the dark
about electroweak interactions and continental drift. So it is not
unthinkable that he also chose not to tell us scientific details of his
    creation process.

One last thought before I try to exit again from a discussion that is going
nowhere. Does it really please God when we try to ask Genesis 1 scientific
questions, diverting attention from the much more important questions that
    God is answering there?
