Opening ANY attachment is fraught with risk. Even when it is attached
to an email from someone you know.
I once got an email from my son, with an attachment. But the email
message did not sound like him, and so I checked further. As it turned
out, the attachment was a virus and the email did NOT come from him;
somebody had (successfully) imitated him.
I have received attachments which look like a WORD file (the DOC
ending) and a photo file (the JPG ending.) But a closer look revealed
them to be of the form
GOTCHA.DOC.EXE
or
GOTCHA.JPG.COM
The EXE or COM endings mean they are executable programs; opening them
causes them to go into action!
Lesson -- practice safe computing!
