Re: [asa] "American Association of Christians in Science?"

Preston,

You ask a very appropriate question, IMO:

I'm wondering why the ASA does not identify itself in its name as
Christian or evangelical? Is it a stealth strategy or what? I throw
the idea in the subject line out, not as something I mean to push,
but as a question about why our name is not as straightforward as the
UK org CiS (Christians in Science). There is the obvious analogy to
the AAAS, of course.

Ted (ASA V-P) replies:

When the ASA was formed in 1941, sixteen possible names were rejected,
including the original suggestion of "Society for the Correlation of Science
and the Bible." I do not have a list of the others, and I do not know why
that name was eventually chosen. I've often wondered myself whether we
might have picked something more effective for communicating our purpose,
such as CiS has done, and this very topic has been informally discussed on
Council at least once during my years in office. However, my sense is that
a name change would be a big deal for the organization, and with other
things on our plate Council hasn't had the will or the energy to take it up.
 At least not presently.

If we were to take it up at some point, Preston, what would be your
suggestion(s) for an alternative?

Ted
