Regarding the recognition of metaphors in Scripture, it may help to
point out that one of the problems of Mormonism is the claim that
references to God's arm, face, etc. show that God the Father has a
physical body.
"The trees clap their hands" is another good example of non-literal
writing from Psalms. The parable of tree politics in Judges 9:7-20 is
obviously fictional, with an obvious real-world application. Don't
forget the "I am" statements of Jesus in John-He definitely was not a
vine, door, piece of bread, etc.
