the story. Attempts to identify this event are not confined to Christian

sources but pop up from time to time in secular publications."

I read the "Epic of Gilgamesh" which is supposedly quite a bit older
than Genesis. They have an interesting flood story, of which the
Hebrews could have copied. They report a global flood too, but it
didn't last nearly as long. Also, in that case, the gods wanted to
wipe-out all humans, so the plan of the gods was thwarted by a lesser
god who leaked the plan to a guy who built the ark. The guy who built
the ark was granted immortality, and Gilgamesh traveled to find him to
seek his own immortality (he wanted to know the secret of getting
immortality). It was a pretty interesting read- I'd recommend it.
Here's the copy I bought:

" Gilgamesh: A New English Version" by Stephen Mitchell

261690/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214257566&sr=8-4

There's a very long introduction where the author explains the story
with commentary. I actually found that more interesting than reading
the actual story which follows.
