The shutoff switch isolates your equipment from the grid. You can continue to run your generator and use the power. It just can't get outside your system. I have a very primitive way for taking care of this: I shut off the main breaker. You can also get a manual box which powers some of the circuits in your house. When you have power you plug the box into a special socket you install on your main breaker box. When the power goes down you unplug the manual box and plug your generator into it the socket the main box originally plugged into. And then of course you can get the automatic breaker that disconnects you from the mains when it senses a power outage. They are expensive and not recommended for Saturday mechanics to install. Then you can start your generator (or you can use an automatic starter that starts the generator when the power goes down.)
