I think we ought to give him some credit for this. We *all* get to this
point sooner or later about some important aspects of our theology (anyone
care to explain the problem of evil?) and about some important aspects of
our interpretation of scripture (anyone care to be definitive about exactly
what Ezekiel and Revelation are supposed to mean)? Now, if he had said, "I
don't know, we have to trust, and we have to allow for possibilities outside
our framework -- maybe the universe really is old and we've misunderstood
scripture" that would have been far better.
