First response can be a speculation from a non-geologist: over
millions of years there could be vertical plate movement so that it is
now higher than it was when the canyon carving was just starting. I
know the N.Amer. plate is sliding south-east relative to the north-west
going pacific plate. It's easy to imagine some slight crustal buckling
from the friction between those plates. We're also being pushed west
away from the mid-Atlantic.

 Now to hear from a real geologist if I am near the mark!

I don't know the answer to the delta question. So how many major
rivers in the world have deltas at their outlets?
