My favorite open cluster in a telescope is the Owl in Cassiopeia (it is
upside-down in this pic):

and then there's one of my all-time favorite summer sky objects, the Swan
nebula in Saggitarius: http://www.skyhound.com/sh/archive/jul/M_17.html In
a big scope, the swan looks like a Viking ship or the Dawn Treader under
full sail.
