Bernie,
If you don't restrict the list to those who are currently active (is that what you meant by "modern"), I would put Richard Bube high on the list, possibly in first. He was well regarded in materials science though I don't know how well the rest of the scientific community knew him. He had a huge impact on ASA. Just look at his list of publications in PSCF. And the progression of PSCF while he was editor. If I recall correctly, he said at one point something like "I'm not saying I'm a TE, just that TE is a viable position for a Christian." In any case, he was extremely articulate about the nature of science and how to think about the theology.
I would possibly put Van Till at second, despite his recent pullback from the orthodox creeds. He wrote extensively and articulately as well.
In my mind, Conrad Hyers would be up there but he probably isn't as well known in the broader community.

Surprisingly, I would put Francis Collins a little lower on the list. Yes, he's by far the most well-known of them all. And he's been the most specific as a geneticist on human evolution. But he's written and said very little about science as a whole and relatively little about theology other than to say he sees no conflict.

Kenneth Miller is too focused on the biochemistry and not on the bigger picture. Owen Gingerich would rank quite high as well. Maybe I'd put him in third place. Or even second.

ok, so my thinking has evolved as I've written. I'll end this with my ranking of the moment:

1. Bube
2. Gingerich
3. Van Till

A survey question for you all.

Who are the most famous modern outspoken speakers/authors (celebrities) who advocate any form of Theistic Evolution? If you had to name the top three, who would you recommend?

As far as I know, it would be:

    1.. Francis Collins
    2.. Howard Van Till
    3.. ???

I also heard a little of Kenneth Miller, but don't know much about him. No Deists, though. If there was a panel of three TE's in a symposium, who would you most like to see there?
