In my experience with it (which is via publications on stratigraphy in
which I am reading for information on where the fossils are rather
than for details of just what they do when they drill), the
radioactivity levels are simply used as a fairly easy way to get some
data about the layers in a borehole, without too much concern about
radiometric issues. However, that tells nothing about how folks first
got the idea that useful information could be gotten that way.
