After millions of years of instinctive responses to Creation (our environment) we began to evolve (be created in more of the image of God) a response that is called condition response and it is Creation that does the conditioning ultimately causing us to reason by merit of the immanence of God instead of just feel.

I find nothing in the Bible about there being different degrees of being
in the image of God. In the context of Genesis 1 man was made in the image
of God so that he could be put in charge of the creatures that had
previously been made. This should apply equally to all human beings (as in
James 3:9) and not to other creatures.
By contrast we can be conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29), but
this is a different type and not true of all humans.
