Firstly, living coelacanths are not the same species as fossil
coelacanths. That lineage of fish has continued to evolve.
Secondly, different lineages evolve at different rates -- or rather
the extent to which external morphology changes over time can vary
greatly from lineage to lineage. This is completely consistent with
evolutionary expectations. Even Darwin recognized this. Some
lineages are very conservative over time. A morphology that is very
successful and well-adapted to a particular environment will likely
change little -- especially if that environment is itself very stable.
