Yes, George, it was difficult to get an accurate count back then. I too
learned that there were 24 pairs some years earlier. Apparently it is
difficult to get a good spread by squashing the nucleus and using the
older dyes. I don't know when they got the right count. I also remember
some strange theories about what protoplasm/cytoplasm might be.
