Re: [asa] Global warming: a suggestion

OK. Thanks, Pim, Rich and Randy. And my apologies for not noticing these plots if you've posted them before. Sometimes reading this list is like trying to drink from a fire hose.

HOWEVER, this information is being overwhelmed by slick presentations such as the one done by Brit Channel 4. Perhaps this is an area where ASA could be of service to society: By making a video emphasizing the improvement in the models over time. It should not indulge in hysterics, but should try to counter some of the propaganda floating around. The video could be made available to members, and used in talks like the science/faith lectures ASA has done recently. If we do a good enough job, maybe a news show (preferably Fox, since that's what the conservatives watch) would pick it up.

Of course, these simulations have been done and in fact only when
including human components, do the simulations recover the actual
temperature trends.

 See for instance
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attribution_of_recent_climate_change

See also this page at Woods Hole Fig 2 for instance

Not surprisingly most global warming deniers seem to ignore these
troublesome facts

If someone could show that the models, given the data that was available prior to the cooling trend in the 40's, predict that trend, that might help allay the public's suspicions about computer models. Of course it would also have to be pointed out that the graph shown on CH 4 was apparently messed with (it looks to me like more than the time axis has been messed with)
