I cannot imagine that anyone with any common sense would either endorse or condemn the statement "We're going to take things away from you for the common good" without any qualifications - i.e., without saying what "things" are being considered.

  How many scientists /academics agree with that, and other positions held by that person?

  The answer to that will determine what opinion I will hold about any specific individual.
