I see, I should have remembered that point. Also, smog
and soot tend to be in the lower layers affecting our own health.

It was a little bit problematical with the emission standards, because
the early devices really did tend to draw power from the engine, giving
it less gas mileage. So the emissions were reduced, but the consumption
was increased and increased disproportionately in some cases. Smog
reduction has made cities like Denver a little cleaner
in appearance in recent years, but in a way, the purported CO2 and H2O
emissions were advertised as "good". For human health, certainly, but
it might actually have increased emissions of CO2.

Indeed, it would require a serious life style change to live with V4s and
gutless cars. Cars are definitely more of a necessity in the US than some
other countries, and that would be difficult to change because of the way
the infrastructure is constructed. In Japan and Europe, life built up more
around the railroad. Over the last 50 years in the US, life built up around
the freeway.
