I wholeheartedly agree. Having lived for various periods on every
continent, except Antarctica, I have found that if I show even a modest
attempt at knowing the language and culture of the locals, I am received
into the homes of the locals quicker than even the local's extended
family
members. The idea that someone from somewhere else in another part
of the
world and with a completely different culture shows respect. That is
what
gets one in the door. This is of course one of the main reasons
westerners
are perceived poorly. Most do not take the time to show respect to
other's
cultures. Even here where I currently live, in the US, there is a
nearby
convenience store owned by Koreans. When I go in I get far greater
attention than the other customers, simply because I know how to say
hi and
thank you in Korean. That alone gets me double portions at the deli.
