While such "why" questions often have unspoken premises behind them,
it's entirely possible that there is a answer to the "why" that
matches the scientist's "why". In fact it has a lot in common with
the cosmologist's "why", Christian or no.

Why is the universe so big? Because, just maybe, we're not the only
beings God felt like making. Perhaps in some distant galaxy, another
race of moral creatures is grappling with the immense sacrifice of
Christ, whatever they may call Him. BTW Michael Ruse has an
interesting discussion of this possibility in his book "Can a
Darwinian be a Christian?"
