Love is still a better translation because while you are correct as to the
sacrificial nature of agape, surrender/submission implies subordination that
doesn't necessarily apply. In Ephesians 5 when Paul establishes the metaphor
between marriage and the relationship between Christ and the church, the fact that
Christ agapes the church does not mean he submits to her. Agape applies both
for the love of an inferior for a superior and the other way around and
surrender or submission implies the love of an inferior to a superior only.

Finally, the famous love verse of John (1 John 4:8) would have a decidedly
Islamic feel if translated as you suggest:

God is submission.
You are taking this so far afield for rhetorical purposes that I don't
recognize the thread I entered any more.

I didn't write God is submission, not even remotely and to say I did and
suggest it's "Islamic" given the current demonization of Islam in the media smacks
of rhetoric.

I spent 8 years on a parish council. One major observation. Men don't go to
church anymore.
There was liturgy and little else for them. I prefer self sacrifice to love
because it takes the mind off the sermon on the mount and puts it squarely on
the Cross.
