is something in your intuition/instint argument that I can sort
of agree with, but it seems like it is not adequate to insure
that we obey God when we are tempted.
It is not adequate. Once you surrender you cannot look back. Of course, if
you've surrendered the desires of the self, you won't.

  I think Buddhist realization
(a different post) is not exactly it either, though in _some_ instances,
it might be partly true.

The self sacrifice is first seen in the Vedic hymns, then it travels west to
zoroaster and the persians and east with the buddha's realization. The
mechanics of the self sacrifice are identical in the east and the west.

An important part of the child like aspect is being pure of heart, but
anyway...

I find it shaky to rely too heavily on intuition and it can be
very difficult to know whether I am even following Christ
sometimes.

The shakiness you find when contemplating surrender to God is bolstered by
faith. Remember you are contemplating giving up all worldy desire. That's scary.
