Re: [asa] Global Warming on Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, Venus, ...?

That is interesting. And this is a topic I know essentially nothing about. But there is a paragraph from that article that you sighted Janice, that confuses me.

"All Quaternary warming episodes seem to have been accompanied by increased abundance of atmospheric methane. But many climate scientists think this is an effect, rather than the trigger, of warming climates. In most cases, there is evidence that the methane values only began to rise several decades after the temperature started to climb."

The first part of the article made the claim that there was no evidence of methane from marine clathrates in the warming episodes that he studied based on isotopic analysis. But even if the methane increased "several decades" later where did that methane come from?

The doomsday marine clathrate methane scenario, as I understand it, does not require an release of methane to be the start of global warming. But if the temperatures increase enough, say from CO2 emissions, this could trigger a methane release, and the rate of temperature increase would theoretically accelerate.

So even if it was several decades later, this is something that should concern us now, if the effects are potentially catastrophic.

I have no idea how likely any of that is to happen however.

If the deep seawater temperature rises 3 degrees C, methane will be released much faster than it will be precipitated by carbonate deposition. ~

@ Your article may be outdated.

Methane burps disproved? Gassy emissions no longer in suspect dock for melting the last ice age.
