The following is from a gay friend of my daughter's. I have been forwarding
much of this thread to her, and she forwarded it to him. This is his
response.
One thing I have always been quick to point out. Is that the age in which
people realize they are attracted to the same sex and openly talk about it
is getting younger. I knew in 7th grade I liked boys and had the OMG moment
i am gay. I didn't talk about it cause of how religiously zealous and right
wing my family is. there are many families in the country that aren't
especially religous, and don't really talk about homosexuality even at home
unless it is an indirect misuse of words partaining to it: i.e. this is gay,
you're a fag, and homo. then a 13 or 14 year old comes out and says i think
I am gay. Parents put that kid through hell. There is a great number
homosexual teen suicides for the way parents treat there kids on this issue.
Also, a large number of runaways in homosexual teenagers. lets also not
forget, that still the way many do get into is from a sexual predator
getting involved with them, and often it is within the family. (This isn't
my case. I can honestly say women do not have the same affect a man has.)
there are many common occurances with pregnant teenagers as well. Parent's
get mad at their daughter. They go through so many emotions. There are so
many options that can be taken, and often they don't like what they might
be. many pregnant teens get kicked out, forced into a marriage, or have an
abortion then are kicked out. One thing I can say that I really liked about
jesus and what is written about him in the bible, is he ate with sinners. i
don't believe homosexuality is wrong, but he ate with sinners. I think this
is an incredible example for people especially christians. these people
that kick there kids out are committing numerous sins themselves. one, they
are responsible for their kid's upbringing, so if they have done something
like this and you kick them out for it, what kind of parent are you. jesus
sat with sinners that wasn't even his family. he treated them like human
beings and treated them with the respect they deserved whether or not he
liked, hated, or was indifferent to what they did. he treated them with love
and compassion and respect. i think this is where much of the christian
world falls apart. it claims to be full of love and compassion, but when it
comes to the "big stuff" it so is not. people look down upon people with
some idea that they are the scum of the earth. and we look at them and
think we should give a damn about what this person thinks. This is stuff i
have witnessed and seen. This ruins lives beyond what their "mistakes" may
be. kicking a kid out at 14 or 15 will cause them to live in poverty and
force them to whore themselves out as their only source of income. Which
further spreads disease, increases abortion, and increases homelessness
rates...which will eventually directly affect taxes for everyone in the
country to some degree. So essentially our government needs us to be loving
and compassionate. Humans were designed to give/recieve love as a means of
survival. We need it. it infuriates me to no end that there are bigots
than can kick their own flesh and blood out of the house like an animal and
treat them like they are sub-human. i really can't think of a good way to
end this other than people need to learn to be loving, compassionate, and
tolerant. People are responsible for their own lives...if something doesn't
involve you and cause you harm, mind your own business. If a guy has sex
with another guy does that involve you? No. Does it cause you any harm?
No. (unless in public then its public indesency and that is 100% different).
therefore, just tolerate it. no one says you have to agree. Love them and
have compassion with them. that i guess is what it comes down to. Sorry
about the lengthy email and any potential typos. I am typing on a computer
in Portsmouth, NH while my family is in the hotel room. god bless.
