I suggest that we create a second ASA email list operating under
different rules.
If we want to keep the current ASA email list, operating under the
current rules, as a service to the general public, that's fine. But I
know that I, personally, would get a lot more benefit and enjoyment out of
a second list operating according to rules more like the following:
---------
0) Anyone can subscribe to read it. (Or they could read the web
archives.)
1) Email list contributers must be ASA members, or guests specifically
invited to join for a month or so, to discuss a particular topic on which
they have some expertise.
2) Contributions should have a substantial degree of scientific and/or
theological scholarship. These could be early drafts of portions of book
chapters which may be published in the futre, or early drafts of articles
which will be submitted to peer-reviewed journal, or contributions could
be requests for information and assistance on topics which might lead to
such a publication.
3) A list member can make at most two contributions per day, and at most
one contribution per day on a given topic. (If several days go by in a
row in which no one sends anything to the list, that's not considered a
problem!)
4) Initially, every post to the list must be approved by the moderator.
At the moderator's disgression, an individual contributer with a proven
track record of good contributions could be (tentatively at least) moved
to an automatic-pass list of contributers.
