"However, does anyone know if the above assertions [about the longest, the
shortest, and the central chapters, etc. in the Bible] are indeed correct -
at
least in the NKJV translation (how about NIV?), and how might one downplay
the apparent pattern? Also when was the Bible delineated with verses and
passages?"

 I think http://www.gotquestions.org/divided-Bible-chapters-verses.html
gives reliable answers. In addition to the late dates for the chapters and
verse numbering in the English Bible, the order of the books is not always
the same in all Bibles. In the Massoretic text of the OT, which underlies
most of our English versions, chapters and verses are not infrequently
numbered differently than in English.
The Septuagint version of the OT has a marked difference in the order of the
books. The chapters also differ. Our Psalms 114 and 115 are merged into one
Psalm in the Septuagint while our Psalm 116 is split into two separate
Psalms in the Septuagint.
