Poor fried Mr. Roe!
I really just wanted to jump on the tree ring thing for a moment,
basically in agreement with what you've said, Dave.
It's hard enough for me to see any straightforward reason why things
like tree rings would be created with apparent age, other than (perhaps
gentle?) deception.
But the mystery deepens when the rings are found to be irregular in that
region corresponding to pre-creation.
The rings could easily have been very uniform in spacing as a reflection
of their uniquely created character.
But instead, they have the irregularities of natural year-long cycles as
we know them.
Why would that be? They are thus masquerading as something they aren't.
That is at least mischief, and at most an integrity issue in my view,
neither of which are consistent with my understanding of the Creator's
character otherwise revealed.
...or so it seemeth to me.
