But your comment is simply prejudicial rhetoric. The flood layers found
in the central cities of Mesopotamia weren't lying on the surface and
weren't detectible without digging in the sand. The reason for digging
wasn't for the sole purpose of finding riverine clay deposits.
Archeological digs are funded so they can uncover trinkets to display in
museums. That's normally done at the location of ancient cities. Since
most of the cities in Mesopotamia had a ziggurat at the center (for
surviving floods most likely), mounds were left in the desert which
marked their location.
No one digs in barren locations just to test for flooding. And there
were no large cities at that time on the upper Tigris until you get to
Nineveh. And apparently the flood didn't get that far north because
Mallowan's layer found at Nineveh was dated much earlier.
