Hi Bill, you wrote:
I wholeheartedly agree that the old-earth and theistic evolutionists are
divided and this greatly hinders our efforts.
It is also true that we should be more vocal against atheistic evolution
and
naturalism rather than siding with them. I will sooner side with YEC
than
atheism. I think we also must be very careful about how we address
YECs,
careful to do it lovingly and not ot vilify them (this is also true
about our
treatment of atheists, of course).
I think we should be united with the YECs on the big issues, and we
should
make that clear, even while criticizing their scientific viewpoints.
It reminds me of the old adage: "With friends like these, who needs
enemies?"
Why not support atheistic evolutionists on their science and refute
their theology, and support YECs on their theology while refuting their
science? Why not be even handed?
I see little difference between someone who says they don't believe in
God and one who says he believes in God, but implies He lies
occasionally.
In fact, my sympathy lies more with the unbeliever. Maybe if he weren't
assaulted by YEC insistence that belief in God requires belief in YEC,
such a person might be more willing to accept God. Our voices might be
heard if we weren't being drowned out by YECs.
I met Stephen Jay Gould some years ago and tweaked him a little by
quoting an Old Testament verse. To my amazement he quoted the following
verse. To be sure, he thought of the OT as poignant literature, but it
was a step in the right direction. How much of his time was spent
refuting creationism? What if he had spent that same time searching out
the Creator?
If atheistic scientists didn't have to spend their resources defending
science against unwarranted attack they might gravitate toward the God
of creation on their own. When provoked they feel the need to respond.
When Christ cast out the money changers, they were Jewish merchants
operating lawfully in a Jewish temple. He didn't go to pagan temples
and admonish those who sold animals to be sacrificed to pagan gods.
Why?
Christ is my example. Anybody have a better example?
