The explanation of in-situ generated C-14 in coal by neutrons generated in
the U-series decay chain is interesting. Some of the effects neutrons
generated in the decay of U-238 are well known: Fission product Tc-99 and
activation product Pu-239 have been found in high-grade uranium ores (e.g.,
Cigar Lake, SK). My guess is that any C-14 would be in secular equilibrium
and, if so, there should be a correlation between [C-14] and [U] in coal.
Has anybody done this calculation? I recall that, some years ago, the ANS
was distributing small samples of graphite from Enrico Fermi's "pile" to
commemorate some anniversary. Somebody must have looked for C-14 in that
material.
As to Burgy's comment, "I cannot help but compare the statistics [of the
ICR] above to those of ASA. Remember, this is ONE of several YEC
organizations. Overall, they are 100 times our influence." I doubt if the
ASA would be able to have the same influence as the ICR even if it had a
budget similar to that of the ICR. Going counter to a literal or popular
interpretation of Scripture is tough sledding.
