I cannot imagine Gould as a friend of the current ID movement.
Ted comments:
On Goud's behalf, I can reply categorically that he was no friend of ID. I
did not know him, so how can I reply on his behalf?
(1) A friend of mine (one of TDI fellows) tried to interview Gould several
years ago, concerning Gould's own theory of punctuated equilibrium and his
views on the Cambrian explosion (and no, the friend is not the obvious
choice of Steven Meyer). Gould tenatively agreed, but then denied the
interview when he learned of my friend's interest in ID. And he gave that
interest as his reason for declining the interview.
(2) I almost interviewed Gould myself a few years ago--the only time I was
offered was too close to my flight out of Boston for me to do it. Working
through a friend at Harvard, assurances had to be given that I am not a
creationist (accurate) and that I am not an ID (also accurate). I simply
wanted to ask him about his late friend Kirtley Mather (Gould gave a funeral
oration for Mather at the Harvard chapel, and my book includes material on
Mather), but when you teach at a place like Messiah such questions pop into
Gould's head.
