Well tonight some Texan has won the tour de France for the 7th time. Over the las tfew weeks I have received several e-mails about cycling from another Texan cyclist Stephen Krogh, as we compare notes on our common interest in cycling. That wont concern anyone else here!

However I am reminded of a Punch cartoon of the 1880s during the height of the penny-farthing craze. It was entitled Evolution of the Cyclist with a picture of a cyclist about to mount his penny-farthing.

He had very long muscular legs (so he could have a larger wheel than anyone else. As I am 5 ft 8 I could only have a wheel some 52 ins in diameter whereas a 6ft 6 person could probably push a 60 in wheel and thus go faster at the same revs. Thus a 7ft cyclist.....), a barrel chest and short arms like a T Rex.

An interesting thought and an insight of evolutionary thought in the 1880s
