True, Michael, that is the pseudo-archaic spelling. Proper semi-archaic
usage demands an a-e ligature. See the original OED, which also presents
'hemoglobin.' To be truly archaic, the combining form is 'haimo-' or
'haimato-'. Any native Greek you ask will pronounce the alpha-iota like
the English long e. Of course, bragging on the use of excessive letters
does not require a rational basis.
