And the question about his motivation was raised. The appropriate steps and
procedures were followed. And, as I keep saying, on each occasion the judge
decided that the husband was acting appropriately. That is he was employing
substitued judgement in making his decision. Substituted judgement simply
means doing what the patient would want if the patient was able to make
their wishes known.
