Although I don't think that humanity is the only part of creation that's broken, I think one could make a coherent case that the curse consists of estrangement rather than a problem inherent in the ground. Just as the estrangement between man and God that results from the Fall does not mean that there's now something wrong with God, the estrangement between humanity and the rest of creation does not necessarily mean that there's something wrong with the rest of creation.
