DEATH AS A SORT OF EVOLUTIONARY BLESSING
There have been numerous articles composed by Christian contributors to
ZYGON magazine over the years, that attempt to explain the "Fall" of
Christian theology in the light of modern evolutionary science. Dembski,
the I.D.ist has also said that he is working on his own philosophical
explanation for how pain and death could have existed for eons in the
animals world long before the appearance of Adam and Eve. Though of
course he vouches for a literal "first couple," and argues that their
choice of eating the forbidden fruit paradoxically brought death to the
first multi-cellular organisms that existed long before them. Though of
course, as the Christian contributors to ZYGON magazine point out, "death"
is necessary for new multi-cellular organisms to continue to evolve. So
evolution makes "death" also a sort of blessing. Interesting questions
all.
Besides G.K. Chesterton, Conrad Hyers' book, THE MEANING OF GENESIS, along
with Robert Farrar Capon, AN OFFERNIG OF UNCLES (which discusses why
"Darwin baiting" is a wrong tactic for the church to take), both helped me
overcome my fear of taking Genesis less literally.
Cheers,
Ed
