I remember the time years ago that my colleague at Berea College Jim
Holloway attended a faculty committee meeting with a new faculty member in
attendance. Now, Jim was an ordained Southern Baptist minister who taught
courses in religion, specializing in the letters of Paul. Somewhat of a
curmudgeon, this Georgian was also a courageous white spokesman for racial
integration in the South long before the sixties. Anyhow, the new member
started the meeting by saying that he thought "we ought to go around the
table and everyone tell how he or she feels about Jesus." That got Jim's
dander up, and he replied, "How I feel about Jesus is between me and Jesus.
This is a committee meeting, not a church meeting."
My point is that there is an appropriate place for soliciting personal
testimonies of faith (as opposed to their being volunteered), but I do not
think this science/religion discussion list is one of them.
