    Sondra,

In Genesis, God created man, male and female He created him (Genesis 1:27).
After God has finished creation, He separated Eve from Adam, making them
distinct individuals (Genesis 2:21-24). Chapter One of Genesis says that God
told them to be fruitful and multiply but Chapter Two does not say that. I
interpret "the two shall become one" as Adam and Eve becoming one by reuniting
the separate parts and working together (towards a common goal) as one. Having
children is a natural consequence of becoming one.

Adam and Eve did not become a totally new, unique and separate being; they
simply became what God had already created them to be. Do we become a totally
new, unique and separate being when we marry? I don't know. Maybe we become
the one we were already created to be. That is part of the mystery of becoming
    one.

    Sheila
