Darryl Maddox sent the following to me. The picture he is speaking of will
be on my web page for a few weeks at

Hello Group;
Some time back Glenn wrote a brief note about sunlight coming in a north
window and shining on a south wall. I thought it was a nice piece of
writing and it reminded me of the attached photo. It was taken in Finland
and my best guess is that the
it was taken sometime around the mid 70's, not that the year matters, nor
does the fact that the picture is of my oldest nephew,
Kevin, and my x-brother in law, Richard.
For those unfamiliar with the uncertainties and the rewards of working in
the geology profession, whether it be in petroleum or mineral exploration,
this photo and the story behind it provide a clue to both. Kevin is my
sister's son by her 1st marriage. At that time Richard was a
project manager for a company that built 3 legged jack up drilling
platforms that are used for drilling exploration wells in relatively shallow
marine conditions. While they were on their honeymoon in Mexico Richard got
the call that said the next platform was to be built in a shipyard in
Finland and so he had better start packing his bags. Moving to
Houston had been a big step for a single mother from a Texas Panhandle town
of 18000 people, but being married for 3 days and finding out you, your son,
and your new husbands two childred have 10 days to get to Finland just
about did her in. Of course some years later she was in Singapore and even
talked our mother into coming to visit. So the geology profession does have
its sudden moves but it also provides opportunites to see things and record
memories that few other occupations, except perhaps the military, can match.
Just thought you might enjoy seeing something similar to what Glenn was
talking about and perhaps understand why he thought it worth writing about.
