I will not repeat all that was written in the posts under this heading, but
I would warn against saying that God did not want the destroying of
anti-Israelite, or rather anti-God people. We read it will happen again at
Christ's return: all those who do not accept Jesus as their Saviour, who
died for the sins of all those that accept Him as Saviour, will be
destroyed, going to Hell, and not accepted on the new earth. Scripture is
pretty clear on that, I think.

That does not mean, that therefor everything that is written in Scripture
has to be understood "literally", no God talks to people in a language they
understand. That language was different in OT times than it is now.

I have said that last sentence before and will not enter into a discussion
    of that again.

The first par. is intended as a warning: not understanding is not the same
as not according to what God said. Thus difference of interpretation may
exist, but deciding that God did not want the people deviating from His
    will destroyed, is quite another.
