The Interlinear Bible has in its literal word by word translation:
"And called God the light Day, and the darkness He called Night; and was
evening and morning day one."
In the margin it has "the first day." It appears both are correct. As so
often, translating is not just taken words and then translating, but it
must take into account the habits and usages of the users of languages as
well. That is alrady so when translating from one modern language into
another as I know from experience having translated fro erman, Dutch <rench
into English. Translating is not just a "word" translation.
