Browsing the Penrose library (U of Denver) last week,
I came on a quotation by Polybias, ca 204-122 BC.

It seems to be an early precursor of what we call today either
    "Methodological Atheism" or "Methodological Naturalism."

"Whenever it is possible to find out the cause of what is happening, one
should not have recourse to the gods."

The reference is in "The Theory of the Mixed Constitution in Antiquity,"
    1954. by Von Fritz.
