(did my response re Colson's Breakpoint piece make it to the list
yesterday? I saw no response...)
As a constructed language hobbyist (witness my personl domain name
"mrklingon.org" below) I've been running the SetiAtHome program for a long
time. If nothing else, as a communal computing project it is a
fascinating endeavor. I happened to be visiting the web site
(http://setiathome.berkeley.edu) the other day and wandered into an
ongoing opinion poll regarding the project.
People answered "Why" they were participating in it and answered with a
wide variety of reasons. Many were just silly ("I can't get a date on
this planet, maybe there is someone out there") to the outright
theological... or anti-theological. Some were downright hostile, hoping
that the discovery of aliens would end religions once and for all.
Others expressed hope in learning how/who God had created elsewhere in the
universe. One noted: "I looked ya'll no where is the bible does it say
God only put life on this planet!" Another even answered with a passage
from the Qur'an: "Praise be to God, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the
Worlds; " Al-Qur'an (1:2).
